Anticipation is building for the next smartphone launch from Google, believed to be the Google Pixel 8a. Without official confirmation on this eagerly awaited device, we find ourselves turning to the publicly accessible Android bug tracker for insights.
According to a discussion on the bug tracker regarding battery stats (highlighted by 9to5Google), a Google software developer disclosed that this feature is set to make a return on the Pixel 8a model. While it might not be the most electrifying launch news, it subtly confirms that the Google Pixel 7a’s successor is indeed in the pipeline.
The conversation on the Android bug tracker originated when a feature showcasing detailed battery health metrics was briefly introduced then withdrawn from the software. This feature, as described in the discussion, is expected to reappear with the Google Pixel 8a.
This development suggests that not only will the Pixel 8a include these battery statistics, but it’s likely that future Pixel models will too. Furthermore, the feature could extend to all Android devices with the anticipated release of Android 15 later this year.
Prices and packaging
To jog your memory, our Google Pixel 7a review covered the specifications of last year’s mid-range offering from Google. Announced at Google IO 2023 in May (following the Pixel 6a’s announcement the previous year), the Pixel 8a is expected to maintain the trend with a similar unveiling schedule.
The Pixel 7a was initially offered at $499 / £449 / AU$749. The upcoming model’s price could follow suit, although there are speculations of a possible price increase (similar to the Pixel 7a experiencing a price hike compared to the Pixel 6a).
So far, there have been several leaks and rumors around the Pixel 8a, including a benchmark discovered in August that hinted at lackluster processor performance. Nonetheless, it’s hoped that the device has undergone extensive optimization since that time.
The upcoming device is expected to feature a 6.1-inch screen, consistent with the Pixel 7a, and there’s been a glimpse into the Pixel 8a’s packaging. The official reveal is anticipated to take place at Google IO 2024, the date for which is yet to be confirmed.
