Matt Wood, the vice president at Amazon Web Services known for his leadership in advancing the cloud giant’s machine learning and artificial intelligence efforts, is set to depart the company after a 15-year tenure.

Wood made the announcement of his departure via a LinkedIn post on Wednesday morning. An Amazon spokesperson confirmed the news to GeekWire. As of now, details regarding a potential successor for Wood’s position remain undisclosed.

In his LinkedIn post, he hinted at future endeavors, stating, “I’m excited to continue bringing reinvention, transformation, and the future to more organizations in my next role (more to come on that; stay tuned).”

Throughout his career at Amazon, Wood played a pivotal role in the company’s machine learning and business intelligence projects, well before the advent of generative artificial intelligence. He assumed the role of AWS VP of AI in September 2022, preceding the introduction of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which highlighted the transformative potential of generative AI, prompting AWS and others to react swiftly.

Recently, Wood participated in the launch of Amazon Q, a generative AI assistant designed for business intelligence and software development.

Wood’s departure marks the latest in a series of leadership transitions within Amazon’s cloud division, following approximately five months after Adam Selipsky announced his resignation as AWS CEO, with Matt Garman stepping into the role.
