Interested in stepping outside to kick the ball around? The soccer story game Despelote is arriving on the Nintendo Switch in early 2025. This game had been previously announced for PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
The game Despelote is a narrative-driven title centered around people and the emotional essence and camaraderie associated with football. Players adopt the role of a spirited 8-year-old named Julián from Quito, Ecuador, as he embarks on an afternoon of neighborhood football with friends after school. The storyline reflects Ecuador’s economic challenges in the late 1990s and the community spirit that emerged leading up to the 2002 World Cup. Developers Julián Cordero and Sebastián Valbuena drew inspiration from their own childhood memories and photos growing up in Ecuador to create the game’s setting, dialogue, and experiences.
Despelote was an official selection at the 2023 Tribeca Festival and is among the games highlighted by Wholesome Games’ Wholesome Snack Showcase in anticipation of The Game Awards.
