A TV Adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s The Variable Man is Being Developed

According to Deadline, Humans writers Jonathan Brackley and Sam Vincent are developing a series based on Philip K. Dick’s 1953 novella, The Variable Man. The production is a collaboration between Motive Pictures and Electric Shepherd Productions, managed by the late author’s daughter, Isa Dick Hackett. The Variable Man tells the story of Thomas Cole, a tinkerer who becomes an accidental time traveler from 1913, finding himself caught in an interplanetary conflict in the future.

As reported by Deadline, the adaptation is being written for a UK broadcaster, though a US release remains a possibility. Motive CEO Simon Maxwell expressed to the publication, “With Sam and John’s remarkable work on Humans, exploring contemporary issues through a genre perspective, the series is definitely positioned to attract US broadcasters.” Having enjoyed The Variable Man when I read it, I am optimistic about this adaptation and look forward to what the series brings.
