Doom: The Dark Ages May Emerge as the Newest Major Entry in the Renowned Video Game Series

Demons May Cry: Speculation on a new Doom title has been rife for years. The latest, yet to be confirmed, whispers hint at an unveiling date during the imminent Xbox showcase.

Developer id Software, along with publisher Bethesda Softworks, have dedicated at least four years to crafting a new chapter in the Doom saga. This forthcoming first-person shooter is rumored to debut at the Xbox Games Showcase on June 9. A notorious leaker claims the title will be Doom: The Dark Ages, taking the Doom Slayer on an unprecedented journey back in time, straying from the gothic sci-fi ambiance of the recent series entries.

Leaker Tom Henderson recently disclosed that the project was once dubbed Doom Year Zero, yet “Doom: The Dark Ages” appears to be its official title now. The team at id Software embarked on The Dark Ages in 2020, right after launching the highly energetic (and exceedingly gory) Doom Eternal on various consoles and PC.

Sources without a name have described The Dark Ages as a “medieval-inspired” Doom realm, matching earlier leaks concerning id Software’s vision for the series. Microsoft, the current proprietor of Bethesda and the Doom label, among others, has indicated that the Xbox Games Showcase will introduce new titles and updates on the Call of Duty series.

Though Doom has not attained the colossal fame of the Call of Duty franchise of late, it continues to be a top performer in the game industry. Henderson underlined that an id Software team member disclosed in 2020 that Doom Eternal amasssed over $450 million in revenue for id and Bethesda in that year alone.

Fresh, yet to be confirmed leaks about a new Doom installment have recently emerged online, beginning with the IDKFA trademark registration by Bethesda’s parent entity, ZeniMax Media (acquired by Microsoft since 2021). A potential Doom-themed announcement at the Xbox Games Showcase was hinted at earlier this month, and Henderson has now independently corroborated this rumor.

Doom ranks among the most iconic gaming franchises, with id Software captivating and amusing FPS enthusiasts (including yours truly, a seasoned demon-hunter writer) since the early nineties. Doom Eternal, the franchise’s latest offering, brought substantial gameplay and graphical improvements, powered by the formidable id Tech 7 engine.
