In brief: Raspberry Pi just launched the Raspberry Pi AI Camera as an affordable component for AI-driven projects. It pairs nicely with the company’s new Raspberry Pi AI Kit for the Pi 5. However, it’s compatible with all RP models, not just the Pi 5.
Recently, Raspberry Pi partnered with Sony to develop a camera with a built-in AI accelerator. This design allows the Sony IMX500 image sensor to process images, leaving the Pi more cycles for other AI tasks. The camera supports several neural network models with high energy efficiency and low-latency processing.
The RP AI Camera uses a 12 MP Sony IMX500 Intelligent Vision Sensor, capable of capturing images at resolutions up to 4056×3040 at 10 frames per second or 2028×1520 at 30 fps. It has an adjustable focus and a 78-degree field of view.
Unlike the Raspberry Pi AI Kit, which is only compatible with the Raspberry Pi 5, DIYers can connect the AI Camera to any Raspberry Pi model, including the more affordable Raspberry Pi Zero, through standard ribbon cables. This backward compatibility allows users of earlier Raspberry Pi versions to start AI projects with minimal additional investment.
The camera’s key strength lies in its integration with Raspberry Pi’s software ecosystem, including its camera stack, libcamera. The IMX500 sensor captures and processes frames using an integrated image signal processor before handing them off to the AI accelerator, where models like MobileNet SSD or PoseNet can perform object detection or pose estimation, as demonstrated in RP’s video examples (above and below).
Users can also develop custom AI models or convert existing ones via Sony’s AI tools. It makes the component a flexible platform for developers, researchers, or AI enthusiasts.
When paired with the Raspberry Pi 5, a faster custom protocol enhances the data transfer speed between the camera and the processor. Both products provide strong AI acceleration, with optimizations designed to integrate seamlessly into the Raspberry Pi camera software stack. So, while the camera works with any Pi, the AI Kit offers more bang for the buck.
