Netflix has added Sonic Mania Plus to its selection of games that subscribers can play for free on mobile devices, free from advertisements or in-app purchases. The addition of this title, along with Game Dev Tycoon, was first announced in December 2023. Sonic Mania Plus, a creation celebrating the 25th anniversary of the franchise, has been developed by fans renowned for their contributions to the Sonic fangame and ROM hacking communities. Since its initial release in 2017, it’s been celebrated as one of the all-time best Sonic games. The 2018 release of Sonic Mania Plus brought in extra content, and Netflix confirms that its version includes new levels and bosses as well.
Adding to its gaming offerings, Netflix will introduce the anniversary edition of Braid on May 14th. This game, acclaimed for its innovative time-manipulation mechanics, lets players navigate the protagonist Tim through a series of interconnected worlds in a quest to rescue a princess. This enhanced edition features better audio, new animations, overhauled graphics, more puzzles, and even includes 15 hours of developer commentary that explores the game’s creation.
Netflix’s gaming catalog will also expand to include the top-down puzzle adventure Paper Trail on May 21 and a Stories game based on the Virgin River series on May 29. Additionally, the 2019 platformer Katana Zero, featuring a dystopian narrative with a katana-wielding assassin, is set to join Netflix games, though its release date is yet to be announced.
