Mewgenics, the cat-breeding RPG that was first revealed as a sequel to Super Meat Boy, is set to release in 2025, according to a recent trailer by IGN and the game’s updated Steam listing.
A unique fusion of a turn-based RPG and an eccentric cat simulator, Mewgenics originated as Team Meat’s next venture, the duo of developers Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes. Throughout 2013, Team Meat teased Mewgenics in various announcements, but eventually paused its development in 2014 to concentrate on finishing Super Meat Boy Forever, a mobile sequel to Super Meat Boy.
After McMillen departed from Team Meat in 2018 to focus on supporting The Binding of Isaac, Mewgenics transitioned with him, and the game has been gradually approaching its release since then. The new trailer suggests that repetitive, turn-based battles will play a significant role in Mewgenics, while maintaining McMillen’s signature grotesque animation style (along with all the quirky cat furniture).
For those interested in how the game has evolved since its initial announcement over ten years ago, McMillen and co-developer Tyler Glaiel have consistently shared blog updates on Steam detailing various aspects of the development journey. Additionally, we can expect to see much more about the game soon: In their latest announcement, Mewgenics‘ developers revealed that IGN will be publishing hands-on previews of the game in May.
