The Day After: Trump’s Tariffs Impacting Nintendo’s Switch 2 Development

Timing is critical. Just hours after I published our Friday newsletter discussing the pricing of Nintendo’s new console, the company announced it would in response to a new wave of tariffs introduced by President Trump.

“Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the US will not begin on April 9, 2025, as we reassess the potential effects of tariffs and changing market conditions,” Nintendo informed Engadget. However, the console’s launch date remains set for June 5.

Last week, the Trump administration unveiled a new set of tariffs affecting several countries, including Japan (Nintendo’s headquarters), China, and Vietnam. The latter two countries, which are major manufacturing hubs for Nintendo’s hardware, will face import duties of 54 percent and 46 percent.

Nintendo has announced that the Switch 2 will retail at $450 upon release — a price point we’ve discussed frequently — but there has been no indication yet on whether this price will be adjusted or if the company plans to supply fewer consoles to the US market.

Nintendo isn’t the only company reevaluating its plans in light of the new tariffs. is also halting shipments to the US. With vehicle imports facing a 25 percent tariff, the company told the AP that it is “taking some short-term actions, including pausing shipments in April as we formulate our mid- to long-term strategies.”

Smaller businesses are likewise navigating these changes: , known for its modular and repairable laptop products, announced it is suspending US sales of some laptop models.

In a study featured in the journal iScience, researchers from the US and Denmark report successfully creating tasty miso on the International Space Station, though its flavor and aroma differed from traditional Earth-made miso. The study suggests these results reflect a unique “space terroir”, a concept similar to the term used for wine grapes to denote distinct, location-driven flavor attributes.

“Specific characteristics of the space environment in low Earth orbit — particularly microgravity and heightened radiation levels — could influence how microbes proliferate and metabolize, thus affecting fermentation processes,” stated co-lead author Joshua D. Evans of the Technical University of Denmark in a press release.
