Multiplayer: Yes | Year released: 2019
Initially, I had reservations about Astral Chain when the first trailer was released, and even several hours into playing it. It initially seemed a bit too conventional, reminiscent of typical action game formulas. However, my concerns were unfounded, as it turned out to be one of the most unique games in recent years from PlatinumGames, the creators of the Bayonetta series.
Set in a future where the world is perpetually under threat from beings existing on a separate plane, you assume the role of an officer in a special force designated to combat this menace. The game’s distinctive feature is your ability to tame these creatures and transform them into Legions, which aid in battles. Gameplay involves controlling both your character and the Legion simultaneously to take on hordes of enemies and larger, more formidable foes. Beyond combat, your Legion(s) also assist in solving crimes and navigating environments.
Astral Chain follows a cycle of detective tasks, platforming puzzles, and combat, perhaps too rigidly, with the game divided into cases that act as chapters. The narrative starts strong but soon becomes a blend of various anime clichés, featuring twists and plotlines familiar from notable shows and films. However, the engaging gameplay keeps you captivated throughout the approximately 20-hour main campaign and into the substantial end-game content.
Does Astral Chain match the level of Nier: Automata? Not quite, but its combat and settings often exceed it. Considering it’s often available for under $50 now, it’s definitely worth delving into.
