Top Smartphones to Consider Buying in 2024

You might already have a favorite in mind for your next smartphone purchase. With a vast selection of excellent handsets from numerous companies all offering similar prices and features, the decision isn’t always straightforward. If you’re settled on an iPhone, your choice is simpler. However, for Android users, the array of options is broader, necessitating more considerations before making a purchase. At Engadget, we’ve reviewed phones extensively and tested numerous devices over the years. For 2024, our top picks remain unchanged from last year, with Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro and Google’s Pixel 8 leading the charts. If you’re eyeing these, considering Samsung’s new Galaxy S24 phones, or any other device, we’re here to help you choose the best phone to buy this year.

Choosing the best smartphone often begins with deciding between iOS or Android, each having its own advantages and drawbacks. Apple’s ecosystem allows seamless data sharing and hand-off functionality between iPhones, iPads, and Macs. However, its exclusivity to Apple devices can be limiting, as services like Apple Messages aren’t available on other platforms.

On the other hand, Android offers a more extensive range of handsets from brands like Google, Samsung, and Sony, among others. Nonetheless, Android phones may not receive as prolonged software support and could have lower trade-in values. Ultimately, there’s no definitive choice, but you should consider how your phone will integrate with your other devices. Unless you’re ready to switch operating systems and learn a new one, it’s probably wise to stick with the same OS, especially if it’s the dominant platform within your household.

As your smartphone often doubles as your primary camera, selecting one with the right photo features is crucial. While most modern phones can capture fantastic photos in bright light, those desiring long optical zooms will need to invest in higher-end devices.

Mid-range phones typically have two rear cameras (a primary wide-angle and a secondary ultra-wide lens) and may struggle in low-light environments. Different manufacturers offer various features targeting distinct styles, such as Apple’s color presets and Google’s Pixel 8 tools like long exposure and Action Pan modes.

In 2024, most smartphones support at least Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6e and some version of 5G. However, for the absolute fastest wireless speeds, you’ll need to spend a bit more. Networks using mmWave 5G can offer gigabit download speeds, reduced latency, and enhanced bandwidth but necessitate more costly modems often not found in cheaper models, such as the unlocked Pixel 8.

Fortunately, mmWave 5G isn’t as widely available, so you might not miss out much if your new phone doesn’t support it. The same goes for Wi-Fi 7, seen in high-end handsets like the Galaxy S24 but harder to find in budget phones. Remember, Wi-Fi 7 requires a compatible router. The lack of support for mmWave 5G or Wi-Fi 7 shouldn’t be a major concern unless you have specific needs in mind.

Different users prioritize different features, so consider what specifications are most critical for you. Mobile gamers will enjoy 120Hz refresh rates on phones like the Samsung Galaxy S23 or Apple iPhone 15 Pro. If battery life is a priority, opt for a larger iPhone or an Android phone with a battery between 4,000 and 5,000 mAh. A phone supporting reverse wireless charging can be advantageous, especially for those managing multiple devices, such as the Galaxy Watches that can be recharged using Samsung phones.

The changes to the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max may appear minor in isolation, yet collectively they enhance the user experience significantly. For the iPhone 15 Pro Max, the lighter, smaller titanium build may extend its appeal to more shoppers for possibly the first time. It’s now more manageable while still boasting one of the longest-lasting batteries available.

The larger model also includes a new 5x telephoto camera, bringing it in line with Android flagships that have long had zoom lenses. Though Apple’s photographic capabilities don’t surpass the competition, the gap has narrowed considerably, and the cameras on both the Pro and Pro Max are excellent. They come with updated portrait effects and editing tools, making photography better whether your subject is near or far.

Both iPhone 15 Pro models feature the new Action Button and USB-C charging, which will become more significant as the industry moves away from Lightning cables. The Action Button, previously a mute slider, can now be mapped to various shortcuts, making it more versatile and functional.

The new A17 Pro chip provides top-notch performance and includes a six-core GPU that supports console-level gaming and hardware-accelerated ray tracing for life-like lighting effects. Titles like Resident Evil Village and Assassin’s Creed Mirage will be optimized for these iPhones. Additional features include a second-gen ultra-wideband chip for precise object location and reverse USB charging for accessory power boosts.

Overall, the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max offer substantial upgrades from their predecessors and stand out as some of the best phones available. – Cherlynn Low, Deputy Editor
